The newest of these are the 19 of what’s called Virginia class.Īrmed with dozens of Tomahawk cruise missiles and torpedoes, the 377-foot, 8,000-ton Virginia-class subs can cruise at more than 28 mph (46 kph) and stay submerged indefinitely. The US has three classes of attack subs in its fleet of 53. “Attack submarines are designed to seek and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships project power ashore with Tomahawk cruise missiles and Special Operation Forces (SOF) carry out Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions support battle group operations and engage in mine warfare,” the US Navy says atop its attack submarine fact sheet. Here a dolphin swims in front of the USS John Warner, during its sea trials in May. USS John Warner commander Dan Caldwell said that when subs are cruising along the surface, dolphins are swimming along with them 90% of the time. Better at land attack? Better at hunting surface units or other subs? Better at gathering intel? Maybe if you boil it down to the technical stuff you could compare raw numbers like sonar 1 is better than sonar 2 in theory but even then you have to consider new factors, like environmental stuff (surface ducts, ambient noise etc), how good are the sonar operators, how good are the officers in using the information from the sonar guy.Dolphins love subs. Cause the Virginia class isn‘t just one all encompassing class its multiple blocks with multiple capabilities. ![]() At what is the Astute better? Better on a technical level? Maybe? What Block of the Virginia are we talking about here thats a factor here too. Imo the real answer regarding stuff like this is always: it depends. those things just don‘t really happen in a vacuum. Imo questions like this when regarding military hardware from the same timeframe is pretty much impossible to answer (if its not a completely terrible design) the larger you get the harder it becomes because you have to compare so many factors, it depends on crew training, environmental factors (especially with subs), tactics used, doctrine, maintenance, available intel, technical glitches, capable officers, problems with the material that was used building it, mechanical problems etc etc. They're generally a similar size, with probably similar speed, test depth, weapons capacity, quieting, sonar, etc. And of course many of the characteristics you would use to determine how "good" a submarine is are classified.Īll that being said, I think the Astute and Virginia are roughly comparable. So which submarine is better is highly contextual, and different countries have different goals and missions in mind when designing submarines. Petersburg in the shallow water of the Baltic, the Type 212 is better. Is a German Type 212 better than a Virginia? If the mission is trailing a Russian submarine for weeks in the middle of the Atlantic, the Virginia is better. But for submarines of roughly the same era, it is not so clear cut. If you're comparing a U-boat to a Virginia-class SSN, it's quite obvious which is better. It's kind of an impossible question to answer, and I think anyone who says "x submarine is way better than y submarine" probably doesn't really know what they're talking about and thinks they're an expert because they read a wikipedia article.
